A semiconductor manufacturer opened a research centre dedicated to power efficiency, with work concentrated on power delivery and thermal design rather than on the process node development that dominates the company existing research programme.

The centre employs an initial staff of around two hundred, expected to roughly double over three years. Roughly a third of the initial intake transferred from existing sites, with the remainder recruited locally and from two partner universities.

The research focus

Power delivery has become a constraint as densities rise, with an increasing share of a chip energy budget consumed before it reaches the logic that performs work. The centre will investigate delivery architectures intended to reduce those losses at the package level.

Thermal work runs alongside, covering both materials and the physical arrangement of heat paths through the package. The company said the two problems are treated together because solutions to one frequently constrain the other.

We have spent a decade making transistors smaller. Getting power to them efficiently is now the harder half of the problem.

Partnerships

The centre operates two joint programmes with universities, both covering doctoral research with publication rights retained by the academic partners subject to a review period. A third programme covering materials characterisation is under negotiation.

The company declined to give a figure for the investment. It confirmed the site is intended as a permanent facility rather than a project based arrangement, and that results are expected to feed into product lines within four to six years.
