The national indoor record in the sixty metres fell at the championships, with a mark that had stood for eleven years taken in a final run into a strong field and decided by less than three hundredths of a second.
The winning time improved the previous record by four hundredths. The athlete had already run inside the old mark in the semi final earlier the same afternoon, though that run came with a following reading that placed it outside record conditions.
The race
The start was clean and the field stayed close through the first thirty metres. The decisive separation came in the drive phase, with two athletes pulling clear and the result unresolved until the line.
Second place also finished inside the old national mark, a result that would have been a record in any previous edition of the championships. Third was a little over a tenth back.
I knew the semi final was quick. I did not expect to have to run faster again two hours later.
Selection
The performance moves the athlete inside the qualifying standard for the continental championships later in the season. Selection is confirmed at a meeting next month, with two further domestic meets available for other athletes seeking the mark.
The federation described the championships as the strongest in recent years across the sprint events, with season best performances recorded in four of the six finals contested over the weekend.
